Mapquest says 5 hours, ';heavy traffic estimated time 6 hours 30 minutes'; We are leaving MGM on Tuesday, September 25th at 11AM - give or take 1/2 hour. Should we leave earlier to avoid traffic? Or are we ok? Anybody done this and know a good spot is to stop for gas? Thanks everyone!

yellow, I drive LA- Vegas every couple months. Same traffic. I prefer 10am departure but on that day at that time you should be in the 5 hour range +/- half hour. Some SD drivers may amend this but it%26#39;s not a major worry on a Tuesday at 11. 80mph for a long ways.

In general, weekdays are less busy than weekends.
Since you are leaving MGM which is south end of town, hopping on I-15 south heading out of Vegas is relatively quick. You avoid the morning weekday rush 7am-9am since that is mostly around spaghetti bowl (downtown area).
I personally prefer early morning start (6 or 7am) cause it is cooler. September is not too hot so you will be ok. Driving speed and traffic determines how fast to get down to S.D. I usually take I-15 south then around Riverside, CA I switch to I-215 south, avoiding all the morning rush in LA area (9-10am by the time I get to that area) %26amp; straight down to SD.
It is about 5 to 6 hours drive if you want break in between. I usually stopped at Barstow for gas %26amp; break. I also have done non-stopped to SD which then took about 4.5 hours (speed a little).
