Bringing my hairdryer from the UK

I know that the majority of hotels have hairdryers in the bathrooms. However, I need to take my own as it has a diffuser on the end (which, to the uninitiated, is an attachment that stops your curly hair from frizzing up like a candyfloss).

I know I will need a two pin adaptor but have I read somewhere that the voltage is all different and how do I get round this?

Your hairdryer will not get very hot if at all on half the voltage and will require a step up transformer.

I should mention that you can purchase a brand new hairdryer in the US for about 1/3 the cost of a step up transformer large enough for your current unit.

Check the voltage on your hairdryer and if it has the 110v on it then it will convert and work although it may take a little longer to dry your hair. if it just has 220v and 240v then it will not work with the adapter.

Best thing you can do is take a travel hairdryer with a diffuser they are cheap to buy from somewhere like Argos and they work fine - this is what I do.

DrV - I have looked at my appliance and it says that it is 230-240v.

Is this compatible for us in the US or do I still need a transformer? If so, the idea of buying a new one is more appealing.

Nope, it will not work. At best it will blow room tempurature air. You can buy a new one at CVS or Walgreens on the Strip for $20 or less.

Thanks both of you.

I%26#39;d go to CVS once on the strip and buy one. Hairdryers are less expensive in the US than in the UK. What you might pay 拢20 for here is around $20 in the US.

Use the hair dryer in the hotel, but first go to CVS or Walgreen%26#39;s on the Strip and buy a diffuser attachment. The sell the nylon %26#39;sock'; types for about $3 or the rigid plastic ones (much better) for about $8. Much easier than lugging your own dryer thousands of miles.

I too have a mass of curly hair and need a diffuser. I always just pack the rigid plastic diffuser (Sunbeam makes an excellent one that adapts to many different nozzle sizes) and use the dryer in the hotel.

Good luck!
